Continued population growth, contamination of both surface water and groundwater, uneven distributions of water resources and periodic droughts have forced water agencies to search for new sources of water supply. The use of highly treated wastewater effluent, now discharged to the environment from municipal wastewater treatment plants, is receiving more attention as a reliable water resource.
