تمثّل الصدوع جزءاً من تسلسل تطوّري لتمدّد القشرة والوشاح العلوي يؤدي إلى تصدّع عادي ناتج عن الامتداد. وأحواض الصدوع، كفئة جيولوجية متميّزة، لا تشكّل سوى نحو 5% من مساحة أحواض العالم، غير أن فهم أنظمة الصدوع يساعد على كشف جزء كبير جداً من جيولوجيا الأرض. وإضافةً إلى كون أحواض الصدوع أساساً لكثير من التاريخ الجيولوجي، فهي أيضاً مناطق جذّابة للغاية لتراكمات الهيدروكربونات.
